Pate de Verre with Sayaka Suzuki
This class will explore the traditional art nouveau style of pate de verre, a glass casting and mold making process using glass powders and frit. The results of pate de verre are unique; from being completely opaque like marble, to translucent to transparent with opaque components. The particle size of the glass determines the outcome of the castings.
The class will begin by making color samples by mixing glass powders together to make various shades. We will discuss opacity, transparency and ways to achieve the variations. We will create relief designs in clay to learn about the movement of glass and color application of colors. We will mix, paint, and create gradations with powdered glass to create our own language of colors. So not only will you learn the traditional mold making techniques, you will learn to work like a painter- painting with paste of glass powders.
Skills learned : Students will learn basic clay modeling (that will not be fired), mold making for glass, painting with glass powders on relief forms, creating personalized gradations and various tints of glass colors, basic coldworking and polishing. I will work on students one on one with idea development. This won’t be a conceptually based class, but I will discuss some artists, show examples and speak on the traditions of pate de verre to spark idea development.
